iPad dummy v1 complete

The iPad dummy is complete! This means I can carry around a thing that is the same weight as a real iPad so I can get used to it in my bag. Actually, this is just a shiny version of a real product that will be used for prototyping cases, stands and such.
The back was printed at NextFab Studio out of ABS. The front was cut at Surbeck Waterjet from a scrap of glass left over from a job for P Diddy’s house. Version 2 will be CNC routed out of MDF. This will make it cheaper, but not the prefect weight.

I’m working with John Young to make an iPad dummy for use in prototyping and showing off. I just got the back half from NextFab Studio. This half was 3D printed with white ABS on their Stratasys machine. The other half is a piece of water jet cut black glass from Surbeck Waterjet. The glass has a special story with it, but I’ll save that for the next post on this project.
The completed 3D files will also be up on Thingiverse.

I just got my copy of The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym by Edgar Allan Poe. The design was for a one-of-a-kind book that Val and I designed and printed. Once it was finalized, I put it up on Lulu for sale. So far, I’m the only person to buy it, but that’s ok. Go take a look!

Ban Hammer: 3D printed

I made a thing! This thing did not exist before I decided to make it.
John Young called out to me from his universe, “Make me a Ban Hammer!” So after a little 3D modeling and research, I conjured into existence the worlds only real Ban Hammer.

I made a real life Ban Hammer for Banning things. The print took 1.5hrs for each half on a Makerbot at Hive76 and I welded each half together with Weldon, a nasty solvent. It mounted nicely on replacement hammer handle.
I need to tweak the design a little. See if you can spot the obvious mistake. When it’s done, it will go up on Thingiverse.

Open house at 3D printer SolidTechnologies

Just this morning I went to an open house at the 3D printer and wholesaler SolidTechnologies and got to see all their cool stuff. SolidTechnologies uses and sells Z Corp printers. These printers lay down a thin layer of gypsum, and then selectively solidify it with a binder that they can also add color to with plain old HP inkjet cartridges.
