I have been using only one social media app or platform a day in April. Today is the last day for WordPress. So here’s a rundown on what I learned.

Monday
Weathermob
This is a fun small app and network all about weather. It sounds boring, but everyone was really friendly and the posts were mostly beautiful landscapes. I will be using this more.
Tuesday
Wordpress
I just need to blog more. I have been slacking. I can’t blog all day, so that made WordPress day a vacation.
Wednesday
Facebook
The iOS app sucks. I know the most people IRL on FB. Still didn’t miss it much on days off.
Thursday
Echofon
I love twitter. I missed it greatly. I will probably use it too much now. Sorry.
Friday
Google+
Not a lot of hourly content. I can do it once a week and not miss a thing. I also like the 3D Printing community.
Saturday
Tumblr
Tumblr is a weird bird. I feel pressure to curate. For some reason I’m not sure of my dash is now full of B/W art pictures and misty landscapes. I guess I should prune or something. Tumblr remains powerful and mysterious like Minecraft or women.
Sunday
Vine
Vine is awesome. Vinepeek makes me live and feel connected to humanity. It’s odd. I found myself wanting to post to Vine on other days of the week. I’ll be using this more.

I also didn’t use Foursquare at all for a month, because a lot of apps also do checkins. I didn’t miss it at all. Did you miss my checkins? I might delete that.

My piece is a print of madame_delano, a digital print that is collaged with a wonderful picture by Jack Delano. My mother Sharon Thompson’s piece is a cross-stitched, fiber art piece made with a pattern I generated from a crop of the engine and orange plume. I made it in KXStitch many years ago and gave it to her on a whim. I have included the pattern at the bottom of this post. After over 500 hours of stitching while watching TV every night, the pattern was transformed into an amazing piece of digital fiber art. I encourage you to see it this Saturday at the Hack 2.0 opening. It is a free event and there is an open bar! RSVP here if you could: http://hackphilly.com/tickets/. I hope to see you there!

My only social media platform I used today was WordPress. Time flies when you’re making stuff.

I did check twitter, but not as much as usual. The main rules is to only post from one app per day. Commenting or retweeting is restricted too. You can do new interesting things with constraints.

I’m bored (read: boring) so I decided to do a little internet experiment. I will only be using one iOS app or social platform per weekday in April. Here’s the schedule:

Monday: Weathermob

Tuesday: WordPress

Wednesday: Facebook

Thursday: Echofon

Friday: Google+

Saturday: Tumblr

Sunday: Vine

Why am I doing this? Let me explain.
I’m stuck on the internet. My communication device is always in my hand or pocket. And therefor I’m always checking the various apps and sites to see if there is something new; to see if maybe I missed something. Once I caught myself opening reddit while waiting for reddit to load, I knew something needed to change. Yesterday I had the brilliant idea of rotating my favorites. I’ll keep to a schedule and only need to check one thing all day. I’ll really dive in if I want, but mostly this is just for focus. If you’re mumbling how even this experiment is stupid and how the the whole internet is a timesuck, then yes. Very good. You’re excused. TTYL.

I’ll see what I actually gain form this experiment in May, but for now, let me explain the choices.

Monday: Weathermob
http://weathermob.me/
Weathermob is an odd one to be in the list. It’s a social weather app, just like Untappd is a social drinking app. The users range from dedicated weather enthusiasts who post screenshot from other weather apps, to teenagers using like any other network and posting cartoons and kittens. In between are a whole bunch of nice sunset and cloud pictures. People who know me know that on my Mondays off I’m suited for discussing the weather and not much else.
Follow me on Weathermob: https://weathermob.me/profile/eagleapex

Tuesday: WordPress
http://wordpress.com/
Wordpress is in there mostly so I can make this post and discuss the project. I also hope to blog more for my own site, upload this piece of art I made, switch from Flash to HTML5 Zoomify interface, and blog for Hive76 at http://www.hive76.org/

Wednesday: Facebook
You know Facebook. It’s mostly a catchall of stuff posted from other places and stupid “images” with a bunch of preachy text. This one is in there because Wednesday is a busy day for me, and also chances are that’s where you found this link.
It’s less likely I’ll add you on FB than anywhere else: https://www.facebook.com/eagleapex

Thursday: Echofon
http://www.echofon.com/
And by Echofon I mean my favorite Twitter client and the one I will be using exclusively in April. It’s nice because it syncs unread counts between the app on various platforms.
Twitter is the best. Follow me: https://twitter.com/eagleapex

Friday: Google+
https://plus.google.com/
I’m angry at Google right now. They killed Google Reader! They killed Google Sync! How the hell can they make money on ads if I’ve never clicked an ad? Ugh. Well, Google+ is a thing. There is a good community of 3D printer people there and it does what a social network should, until it gets shuttered.
Give me all your +1es: https://plus.google.com/101344628908855586319 (that’s some ugly URL there)

Saturday: Tumblr
http://www.tumblr.com/
Tumblr is interesting and I don’t know enough about it. There are people that just click on tags and read all the posts on tags. There are no comments, but reblogs instead. There are well curated blogs that just post black and white pictures of contemporary art. I feel left out. Saturday is for catching up.
I made a tumblr: http://eagleapex.tumblr.com/

Sunday: Vine
http://vine.co/
Vine is new. It’s Twitter’s app for 6 second video loops. Once again, brevity is valuable. Because each post is 6s long, sometimes you let it loop and catch new details every time. It’s a very unique platform and I love posting and catching up on other people’s vines. Also Will Sasso loves lemons.
Vine has no web interface, so here is an embed of my art on the PECO building crown lights:

So that’s the plan. I am not completely sure what I’ll learn from this, but that;s never stopped anyone before.

For my domains I know use Hover and for I got a deal with Name.com to switch. They both oppose SOPA and gave me nice GoDaddy exodus deals.
I got to do some high tech SSHing and mirroring to move 3 websites and 7 domains over, but I think it went pretty well.

“If I was a coder …” Well I’m not. I squatted on the twitter account @twitcognito with the idea to someday make a anonymous tweet thing run via DMs.

twitcognito

Well, thanks to my invite into the new site ifttt.com, I don’t need to code anything. ifttt allows me to set up a task that automates some sort of internet thing. In this case, I just send out the content of a DM as a tweet. That was all DMs sent to @twitcognito get aggregated together and somewhat anonymized. Access is controlled by whom I allow @twitcognito to follow. It will be a bit of an exclusive club. Want to be included? Send @twitcognito a mention and say Hi!
Limitations:

ifttt refreshes every 15 minutes.

Sensitive or illegal tweets still have a digital trail.

ifttt, probably has a limit

It requires a human to allow people in
