qr.ly: changeable short URLs as QRcodes
Problem 1: QRcodes are easier to scan when they have the largest pixels. Because printing space is limited, lower resolution QRcodes are preferred making them easier to decode in the same space. The smallest version QRcode (v.01) can encode a maximum 17 characters.
Problem2: Encoding a short URL instead of a full one allows for much smaller QRcodes, but these short URLs are permanent. If you print a QRcode with a short URL, the original link might change while your short URL and QRcode remain the same and become useless.
Solution: Provide changeable short URLs for use with QRcodes. Because every qr.ly URL must start with http://qr.ly/ that leaves only 4 of the 17 characters available to customize. Using 4 digits of a-z, A-Z, & 0-9 or 62^4 you have available 14,776,336 unique codes. They won’t last long if they are free, so a paywall of $1 is called for.
